What do I do if I have a claim?

One of the most confusing times for our clients is when there's a claim. You've had an auto accident or something has happened that has damaged your home. What do you do? Who do you call? Hopefully this page will help.

Do I have a claim?

If you have this question, your first call should be to us at Lyndall Insurance. You can call us during our business hours or send an email using the form below. We will discuss the incident and help you figure out if you have a claim or not. If there's any question, it's likely worth having a discussion.

How do I file a claim?

Claims are handled by the insurance companies themselves. They adjust the claims and write checks to cover the losses. If you have a claim, your first step is to call the claims number for the carrier your insurance is with.

What happens after a file a claim?

The insurance company will assign an adjuster who will manage the process of studying the incident, finding what coverage is applicable and settling the claim with you for the appropriate amount of money.

If at any point during this process, you have questions or concerns, it is our job at Lyndall Insurance to be your guide and advocate. We represent you and will help you ensure the company is meeting appropriate expectations.

Do I need a police report?

It's always better to have official documentation.

I got into a car accident that isn't my fault

If there's an accident that isn't your fault, ideally you can settle the claim with that other company directly. This takes a bit of work and patience, but it helps keep your own insurance claims history clean. Lyndall Insurance can help guide you through this process and if it becomes too difficult or too much trouble, you can file with your own carrier, pay your own deductible and your company will subrogate after the fact.

For example, if you are insured with Grange and the person at fault is insured with Allstate, you can file your auto claim with Grange, and Grange will take care of you and later try and get compensated by Allstate. 

What is a deductible?

The deductible is the financial portion of the loss you're taking on personally. Typically auto deductibles are between $250 and $1000. If you have a $5000 claim and a $500 deductible, your settlement will be $4500.

Do I have rental car coverage?

Most auto policies sold by Lyndall Insurance have rental coverage, but occasionally clients decline it or ask us to remove it. You'll have to refer to your policy or ask us to refer to your policy to be sure. 

I have an injury. When should I settle?

This is a really tough question. Generically speaking, you don't want to settle until after you're medical treatment related to an accident is 100% complete. When it comes to situations like these, we generally defer to doctors and the client themselves. Occasionally, clients decide to use attorneys. We defer there as well. We are licensed insurance people, but when it comes to situations involving medical expertise all we can do is offer to give you insight into prior experiences as an agency.
